About the WHO Collaboration Centre for Elimination of Asbestos Related Diseases

​We are proud to announce that the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute as the WHO Collaborating Centre for Elimination of Asbestos Related Disease in January 2021 - making it the first and only WHO CC in this area of expertise in the world.

The Collaborating Centre is associated with the WHO Western Pacific Region based in Manila and the WHO headquarters in Geneva. The WHO requires expert advice and scientific insight to carry out its mandate on global public health. Collaborating Centers play an important role in the value-addition to technical work which help the WHO support its mission.

Professor Ken Takahashi, Head of the new WHO Collaborating Centre, said:

"This is a great honor and responsibility, one which we are equipped for given our multidisciplinary team bringing together the respective disciplines of biomedicine, clinical medicine and public health/prevention on a common platform to manage asbestos-related disease."

Our upcoming contributions to WHO’s work in global health in the coming four years will include:

Terms of Reference:

  1. To support WHO in implementing the global campaign on elimination of asbestos-related diseases
  2. To support WHO in helping low- and middle-income countries towards the elimination of asbestos-related diseases

Subjects:

  1. Chemical safety
  2. Environmental health and hazards other than those specifically mentioned
  3. Occupational health

Types of activity:

  1. Support WHO in the implementation of WHO programs and activities at country level
  2. Training and education
  3. Information dissemination

WHO Outputs:

3.1.2 - Countries enabled to address environmental determinants of health, including climate change
